Underline Science Announces New Data Preservation and Video Archive Service
Data preservation is core to the mission of the university library. Publishers of scholarly content have ensured data preservation and security for their library customers through third-party services such as Portico by Ithaka: https://www.portico.org/why-portico/ and CLOCKSS: https://clockss.org/about/.
These services ensure access to perpetually owned content, regardless of the future of any given publisher by providing third-party, independent digital archiving. Streaming video databases, however, present a unique challenge based on the size of each video asset and the ever-growing volume of video assets.
At Underline Science, the world’s first streaming video platform to curate and aggregate scientific conference presentations captured in streaming video, has addressed this challenge by investing in a partnership with Clumio: https://clumio.com/. Clumio provides an accessible and independent redundant storage site for the entire Underline platform. This means the 25,000 video presentations on our platform, and all the presentations we add each week, are preserved independently, permanently, and by a third-party.
Clumio is likely a new player to many in the university library space, but Clumio is well established as a data preservation provider for government, education, and private industry with clients ranging from McMaster University, the California Department of Water Resources, St. Charles Health System, and e.Republic.
Underline Science is dedicated to delivering and preserving critical scholarly communications content to enhance the research experience of scientists. By partnering with Clumio as an independent, third-party data preservation hub, we can ensure your university will retain access to mission-critical assets that are subscribed to or purchased perpetually from Underline Science.
